Charles Hoyt
Charles Hoyt was born to Mabel and Merton Hoyt in Spokane, Washington on July 14, 1919. He grew up and attended Whitworth College where he met his wife, Dolores Muench of Portland, Oregon. He went into the Army three days after graduation and worked as a photographer at Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland and then shipped overseas as a Staff Sergeant with the 137th Division Engineers bringing fuel to the front lines in France and later, Germany.
After the War, Charles and Dolores moved to Illinois where Charles did graduate work and then on to Camas to be part of the early development of Crown Zellerbach's research labs. Working 30 years at Crown Zellerbach, Charles produced a number of patents on processes utilizing paper byproducts including ZeeCon, an early drilling mud additive that opened deep water drilling in the Gulf.
Charles was an avid photographer with a darkroom in his home. Many Camas churches and friends benefited from his event and wedding photos. He loved family camping and hiking. He taught a photography workshop at the Larch Mountain Honor Camp, and served as a Sunday school teacher, Board and committee member and sang in the choir for many years at Camas Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Legion.
In recent years, Charles was an active member of Full Gospel Businessmen and produced recordings and distributed tapes of many conferences in the Pacific Northwest. He also volunteered sound equipment and services to many civic efforts including the annual Vancouver Mayor's Prayer Breakfast.
Known as "Charlie" by his many friends and neighbors, Charles was a steady hand to help and ready smile for all.
In recent years, Charles and Dolores have worshipped with the congregation of Grace Church where their deepest friends in faith continue for Dolores.
Charles passed peacefully at the age of 96 on September 28th. He is survived by Dolores, his wife of 72 years; his daughter, Marilyn Hoyt and son-in-law Dan Wharton of Pelham, New York; 4 grandchildren in Connecticut, New Jersey and California; and 5 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his son Howard, organist at the Cathedral of St. James in Seattle.
