Dolly was "Mom" to all us kids in the 12th street neighborhood and surrounding blocks. Within minutes of walking into her home you were offered 1, 2, 3 cookies and something to drink. I loved seeing her flowers and garden as there was always something to nibble on during the season when we were hard at play. Dolly's infectious laugh could be heard a distance and you couldn't help but smile yourself! I also didn't miss hearing her call my name if I thought I was out of ear shot. My sisters and I were 4-H members and Dolly devoted time as the 4-H leader for, what else, baking and cooking. Boy, did we have fun at our meetings trying new recipes, learning buying strategies and meal preparation. Of course, sampling the finished products was mandatory in case we needed to tweak the recipe. Occasionally, we ate some of the ingredients beforehand which were needed in a recipe. No worries, as this was a lesson in impromptu cooking, adaptation and change of plans! Dolly greatly assisted in our preparation for making it on our own. I remember several times growing up when my folks had to be away and Dolly was there to step in to help in any way, along with a shoulder to lean on. She even took the time to bake me a birthday cake; something I cherish. Dolly send me birthday cards and letters for many years, keeping me up to date on the neighborhood happenings. Oh yes, the 12th street neighborhood was a great place to grow up as a kid and Dolly did her part in making it enjoyable. "I Love You Dolly" and miss you dearly. I have so many cherished memories to thank you for, that will keep me smiling for many years to come.
