David Gordon Beverly, Jr. 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 19, 2010, at The Quarry Memory Care Facility in Vancouver , WA .
David Beverly was born on October 14, 1923, in Wise, VA to David G. & Maude J. Fraley Beverly, Sr. He was the fourth of six children born to his parents.
David lived a full life with many academic and athletic accomplishments. He graduated from South Charleston High School in 1943. During his High School years he played baseball, basketball and football; lettering in basketball. He entered the army in 1943 during World War II as a Sergeant in the 823rd Military Police Company. He was stationed in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe until 1945, until he was honorably discharged. He received the American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal WWII. David then attended Morris Harvey College in Charleston , WV ; member of the Phi Sigma Phi Fraternity. While studying for his BS Degree in Physical Education, he played basketball, baseball and football earning honors in 1946 as Best All Around Athlete. He helped lead all three teams to WVIAC Conference Championships. While in college, David met and married the love of his life, Betty Jo Cunningham. He earned his Master of Science Degree in 1950 in Physical Education from West Virginia University .
In 1952, David moved his family to New York after being offered the Wappingers School District High School Physical Education teaching position. His duties also included coaching boys baseball, basketball, soccer and driver's education. David's coaching led the WCSD basketball team to win the DCSL Basketball Championship in 1959. In 1960, he received his Certification for Principalship from NY University and in 1961, he became the Roy C Ketcham High School Asst. Principal & Attendance Officer. David officiated High School football, baseball & soccer for over 20 years and in 1969, he was the President of the NY State Association of Certified Football Officials. From 1968 to 1982, he became the Wappingers Junior High School Assistant Principal. For an interim period in 1972, he served as Principal. David retired in 1981 after 31 years with WCSD. David was employed at Zoober Pools, Poughkeepsie , NY from 1982-1987. In 1987-1988, he was a Recreation Director for ARC in Dutchess County , NY . While working for ARC, he was involved with the Special Olympics.
David was honored in 1999 for his lifetime athletic achievements by being inducted into the WCSD Thomas Macrini Sports Hall of Fame and then in 2002, he was inducted into the Morris Harvey College Golden Eagle Hall of Fame.
David was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Wappingers Falls , NY and served as an elder, deacon and trustee for many years. He was also a member of the Lion's Club.
David's first wife, Betty, died in 1966, after a battle with cancer. He married Theresa L. Matthews in 1988 and moved to Myrtle Beach , SC , where Theresa still resides. As David was an avid golfer, Myrtle Beach was a perfect fit for retirement.
David loved his students and earned their respect by being firm, fair and consistent. He was highly regarded in his profession and throughout the school district.
David was a loving husband and father. He was an energetic man with a jest for life. He had a great sense of humor and laughed easily. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa, Myrtle Beach, SC; daughters; Brynne Beverly, Sisters, OR, Karen Reed Sigfridson, Woodland, WA, Beth Craig, Cornwall, NY; grandchildren, Brian Katie Sigfridson, Woodland, WA and Eric Elizabeth Sigfridson, Woodland, WA, Scott, Amy and Laura Craig, Cornwall, NY; and one great-grandson, Henry Sigfridson; five nephews and one niece; step children; Michael JoanMatthews S.Charleston, WV, Conny Hodges, S. Charleston, WV and Patrick Mary Matthews, Little River, SC.
David is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Betty Jo, his siblings, Nell Talbot, Lucille Tribbett, J. Pauline Widener, Wm. Howard Beverly and Lillian Browder.
A private family graveside service will be held at a future date. Straub's Funeral Home & Columbia River Cremation in Camas was in charge of the arrangements.
