Ruthie, Jason & Caitlin
I remember the late 60's and hearing Dr. Spock on Boston Common with Al. He came to the apartment on Beacon Hill I shared with friend Lani and shared our spaghetti and bad red wine. Later, husband Whitney and I visited you in Malden and Weymouth. Al was always laughing and fun but never so happy as with Ruthie and you kids. We went out with you the first night Jason stayed with a babysitter. Sorry I never got to WA when Al was alive. You three made his life so very happy.

Dear Aunt Ruthie,
We were all so sad to here about Uncle Al's passing. I will always remember Uncle Al's big smile when we were kids. He would always be sitting there ready to play with all the nieces&nephews. I remember visiting you when I attended Wentworth and how I followed him what seemed like driving in circles. We went by an accident and when we got to the house he said he wanted to see the accident and that is why we went all around Boston! I was so glad you both visited me in Washington too. It was so good to see and talk to him again.
Uncle Al will be missed and always loved.
Love to you Jason and Caitlin

Ruthie, Caitlin and Jason, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Al was like a second father to me, and because of that, I had the additional influences in my life of quiet non judgement, art and craft, love and excellent music. I love you all so much and am so grateful for your presence in my life. I like imagining Al in his Navy days, and I personally believe he is making another beautiful journey now.

Dear Ruthie, Jason, Caitlin and Jeremy,
I hope some of the grief from the loss of Al is alleviated by the everlasting bonds of the wonderful family you all created.
You all have so much in common with your love of the natural world with its wonders and the gentle creatures that inhabit it.
Al was an inspiration through his illness, going through so many tests and procedures, good news & bad news with so much grace. Never losing interest or involvement in life.
I happen to be in Boston, not far from where I have so many memories of you Ruthie and Al.
Blessings to you and all of Al's family in Massachusetts and elsewhere in your sadness.
Much love,

Dear Aunt Ruthie,
Dawn and I were very saddened to hear of Uncla Al's passing. I have many fond memories of him during my early childhood growing up in Massachusetts. He would always carve out time to spend with me. Sometimes it was just sitting on his lap and talking. Other times he would take me fishing or let me tag along behind while he was pheasant hunting out behind grandma and grampas house. These are memories I can still clearly recall, even now as a 60 year old grandfather of 7. When I think about him it will always be with pleasant memories. Dawn and I will keep you in our prayers during this difficult adjustment time. I'm sure you will always miss him but I am equally sure that you will have a reservoir of wonderful memories to reflect on and cherish. Take care. Love, Steve & Dawn

Mom is so going to miss hearing Uncle Al's voice. She cherished those phone calls. I can't even imagine how you are doing. You have been there for me for the past while, now I'm here for you. Just call when you need to talk and I'll do the same. So glad Caitlin is there for a while and Jason is so close now. Wish I could be there in person for you.
Love you all so much

Al & myself met in Boston in the Boston Commons 1967-68, during a tumultuous time. CollegeCampuses were all closing down or were already. The streets, teamed with action, protest AND an ever-growing Disatisfaction with an extremely unpopular war. Al quickly became a Big Brother to me; we WERE brothers.
The parks were a place to escape the
intensity of the streets. Al had such a meek & humbled demeanor & I
cherished his, along with a several others we both met, friendship. We called him the Ol' Goat, w/his goatee' & long hair. After a year later we both met Ruth at one of the many parties surfacing around the area. I nor our circle saw much of Al after that; tho still meeting in the park on weekends, now, of course, with Ruthie at his side. I couldn't possibly tell all the stories here, but Al's friendship met a great deal to me. If you want to hear more email me...Meanwhile we have lost a great man and it breaks my heart. Sail on
Al, your wonderful spirit moved us!

Al's laugh. That man could laugh. I love that laugh and have great memories of so many good times, family dinners, playing poker with him and Jason at that house on the river, him helping with scouts, so many good times. What a great person. I hope to be that kind of a guy some day - someone everyone looks up to.

Dear Ruthie & Family,
Kathy is putting this entry in the guest book for me, since she is my only access to the Internet.
I've been looking back these last few days -
way back. Back to a darling little boy with the most beautiful golden curls. When big
sister, Lorraine 11 years old, would be
pushing his carriage, people would stop and say, "What a beautiful baby, what's her
name." Lorraine, in high dudgeon, would let them know, "He's not a girl, he's a boy!"
And how all the nieces and nephews loved Uncle Al.
Who would've dreamed that little boy would grow up to be so gifted with his hands - such marvelous carvings.
Good times and sweet memories. We didn't always agree, but always, always, there was love. I'll miss you, Al. I love you still.
Love,
Mavis

Aunt Ruthie,
So sorry to hear of Uncle Al's passing.
I'm so glad I was able to see him one last time when Deirdre and I visited in February. He seemed in such good spirits and I was so glad he was able to go out to dinner with us. I'm also glad we had Deirdre's little dogs with us, as I know Uncle Al got such a kick out of them. It was so precious how he loved holding little Henry on his lap. I got a couple of pictures of that and I'll try to put them up for everyone to see either on this site or Facebook or both.
As a kid, I'll always remember going to grandma and grandpa Bennett's house for Sunday dinner, coming in the front door and seeing Uncle Al sitting there. It was always fun to hop up on his lap, laugh and have fun. He always enjoyed the nieces and nephews.
Our love and prayers to you, Jason, Caitlin and Jeremy. We will all miss him dearly.
Love,
Kathy and Bruce

Just sending my love to the three of you and remembering many good times with Al and with your family -- from visits to Charles Street, Malden, and Al's shop, to greeting the new babies, Jason and then Caitlin, to being snowed in in Ithaca, eating in Little Italy, picking huckleberries in the Columbia Gorge, to visits in the Washougal area. A funny, gifted, and truly decent man who loved his family most of all.

Dear Ruthie and family,
Please know how sorry I am for your loss. Despite the fact that we never actually met, I thought of Al as one of my friends and carving buddies these last few years. My personal knowledge of him is limited to the many photos and stories you have shared with me, and I know we would have had a great time together. My best to all of you during a difficult time.
