Wesley Gene Varney
Wesley Gene Varney, born November 13, 1931 in Gold Beach, OR, died in Tuesday, October 23, 2007, from Parkinson?s Disease, at the age of 75 years in Camas, WA. He was the eldest child and only son of Harry Angus Varney and Kathryn Finch Varney.
As a child, Wes lived in Southern Oregon around the Gold Beach area until he was nine years old. Then in 1941, Wes moved to the Washougal area with his parents, and he remained in this area the rest of his life.
As a young man, Wes worked for the Railroad in the Portland and Vancouver round houses, and also for Tidewater Barge Company.
Wes served in the military and fought in the Korean War. After his return, Wes married Dorothy M. Crandell on September 27, 1958 and to them were born two children, Wesley E. Varney in 1959 and Connie M. Varney in 1964.
He owned his own trucking company for three years along with owning the Flying A gas station in Camas from 1954 to 1962. Puget Sound trucking company used Wes?s services and were so impressed by his job skills they finally convinced him to sell his personal trucking company to come and work for them. He did and remained a loyal employee until his retirement in 1988. He was awarded their three million mile safe driver award. He continued his truck driving career part time until a full retirement in 1995 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson?s.
After his retirement he remained active in the community. Every week, he would do food routes for the Treasure House. He was a member of the Lions Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Wes leaves his two children, Wes and Connie, who both still live in Washougal, and two sisters, Kathryn Chamberlain of Vale, OR and Sally Straughan of Vale, OR and companion Fran Bedell of Camas, WA.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 1pm at the Camas Cemetery. Straub?s Funeral Home & Columbia River Cremation in Camas is in charge of the arrangements. Wes will be interned next to his wife, Dorothy M. Crandell Varney. In lieu of flowers memorial donation can be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
