Dear Family, Joe always brought a smile to our faces and we always saw a genuine sense of value for each person that he met. I think that Joe knew how to make people feel important. It never ever mattered how long in between times, that we ran into each other, Joe always treated Jim and I like family. What a wonderful gift that was to us. It is so hard to lose people that we look up to. I know though that when we all get to heaven, it will be the same thing... a warm smile, a hug and that infectious laugh of his that will greet each one of us. I am wishing you all comfort, from the good memories that you have of Joe. I am praying that the pain of losing him is softened by the memories of the great times that you all shared with him. Joe was admired by everyone and had a disarmingly casual way of winning friends and influencing people. Joe had a unique, very special personality. Like Will Rogers, Joe "never met a man or woman he didn\'t like". Joe seemed to know nearly everyone in town! Joe could pin a Lions White Cane on almost anyone! Joe personified Lionism with selfless and tireless service to others. Washougal Lions, the VFW, the Chamber of Commerce and, indeed, the entire community of Camas-Washougal have lost a great friend. Joe, I loved you as a neighbor, friend, and fellow Lion. I take some comfort in knowing that "there are better things ahead than any we leave behind. CS Lewis".
