Obituary of John B. Medlin

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John B. Medlin, 89 years old, formerly of Camas, Washington, passed away 12-21-2011 in Vancouver, Washington. It was with grace, dignity, and humor that John lost his brief battle with cancer. John was born 11-2-1922 in Great Falls, Montana to John and Lucy Medlin. He was raised in Great Falls and graduated from Montana State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. John served his country during WWII, as a Navy LT of an LST and was one of the first Navy Seals. John met the love of his life, Margaret Ohman, on a blind date, and they were happily married for 62 years. He was employed by General Electric and DuPont at Hanford developing patents on Fermi's nuclear fission. With DuPont, John helped create Mylar, Nylon, and nuclear power plants. John had a variety of pursuits. With his gift of piano playing, John put himself through college, at the age of 16, eventually playing at the World's Fair in San Francisco. John enjoyed woodworking, and built many family pieces. He also was an experienced fisherman, having fished off both U.S. coasts. Additionally, John found enjoyment in his bridge groups, which became a lifelong hobby. After the passing of his wife in 2004, John found solace in his bridge group and grief club - which he jokingly called the Lost and Lonely. It was out of these groups he made his dearest friends, especially, Rosamond, Sam, and Mary. John's family is grateful for their love and support. John leaves behind daughter Marcia, sons John and Marc, six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren - who will deeply miss his music and bear hugs. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 at Straub's Funeral Home in Camas on 12/28/2011, followed by a gathering of friends and family at Courtyard Village. If you wish to send a remembrance in John's name, his favorite charity was the Salvation Army. To send condolences or to sign the online guest book please visit www.straubsfuneralhome.com.
