Obituary of Henry Shelton Stephens

HENRY SHELTON STEPHENS Henry Stephens, age 82, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26 at home in Washougal. He was born July 11, 1922 in Parkhill, OK on Cherokee Trust Land and enrolled as a member of the Cherokee Nation. He grew up in Hutchinson, Kansas and as a young man there he was an amateur boxer winning several Golden Gloves Championships. Mr. Stephens was a WWII veteran who joined the Navy in 1942 and served aboard the USS Wright in the South Pacific. He later worked for various utility and community development agencies in executive positions in Oregon and Washington. The last being in Skamania County. Henry loved golfing and working with junior golfers at Carson Hot Springs Golf Course. He went to the Senior World Games in ST. George, Utah twice and won a bronze medal in 2003 for golf. He is survived by his wife, Fern of 44 years, at home; daughters, Betty Jo Gillespie of Alpine, UT, Teresa McMahon of Battle Ground, WA; son, John Stephens of Cottage Grove, OR; brothers, Jessie and Howard Stephens of Hutchinson, KS; sister, Katy DeWald of Hutchinson, KS; 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. At his request his body will be cremated and his ashes will be inurned at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, OR during a graveside service on Monday, November 1 at 11am. A reception will follow at the Skamania Community Church in Skamania, WA. Memorial donations can be given to Skamania County Senior Services or the Skamania Community Church
