I was a student in Mr. Burn\'s first period CWP class at Hudson\'s Bay High School. Although twenty years have passed since high school, I often think of Mr. Burns. In fact, I became a social studies teacher in large part because of my wonderful experience in CWP. There have been many times while I am standing in front of my own students that I have thought of Mr. Burns and held him in my mind as the "gold standard." May God give your family comfort at this difficult time.

I would not be where I am today if weren\'t for Roy "Coach" Burns!!!! He was a great teacher, coach and friend to everyone that crossed his path. Every moment with Coach Burns was a teaching moment and most likely you never even realized that he had taught you a lessson until days or weeks later. He was a fun person to just hang with - whether it was watching or talking about track, hiking with him in the Washougal River Basin or listening to him tell srories about his life. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten!!!

Hello from Hudson\'s Bay class of 1971. When I saw the obtituary, it was instant tears. Mr. Burns was my track coach for 3 wonderful years. As kids, we are often all about ourselves and have a tendency to forget our teachers and coaches. Who could EVER forget Leroy? Not Ever! I have thought of him often over the years and never took the chance to say how much I appreciated all he did for us. To his family, thanks for letting us borrow him for just a short time. He was a very special person. Thank you, LeRoy. And to the rest of my teachers and coaches that may read this - you played a very important part in my life and I love you for it.

My Sympathies...
I would not be where I am today if weren\'t for Leroy. Leroy was my XC coach in the late 70\'s and therefore gave me a much needed physical and emotional outlet during the challenging time of adolescence. Leroy also acted as my counselor; he hooked me up with EWU\'s athletic program and helped me through the college admission process. He made sure I received some financial assistance and got on the work study program. I did not have any financial support from my family, but Leroy encouraged me and told me that I could do whatever I wanted with the right attitude and work ethic. I eventually finished my bachelors degree in Physical Education from EWU in l984 and have attained a few other degrees since. Currently I am a H.S. counselor and cross country coach; through my work I try to do the same for my students and athletes that Leroy did for me...Encourage, Inspire, Motivate and most importantly, let them know that someone believes in them.
A fond memory that I have is of Leroy loading the cross country team into the back of his old truck and taking us down to the sandy beaches of the Columbia River to practice. He also had us run time trials on Lower River road and found it amusing if we had to weave in and out of cattle that were often crossing the road.
I loved taking Leroy\'s Silver Star class as an adult! His walking pace always left the participants breathless and made me smile.
Following his wife\'s death I would occasionally cross paths with Leroy walking the Discovery Trail; he seemed determined to hang on tight to life.
I will miss Leroy, but mostly I will always cherish how his legacy lives through me and countless others whom are applying his teaching and philosopy in my/their own life/lives.
Let me know if I can assist with a scholarship in Leroys honor.
Respectfully, Sheryl Piper

We would like to offer our sympathy to the family of Leroy. Barb and I had the pleasure of working with the "Master of the one liner" at Hudson\'s Bay High School for many good years. We also were afforded the opportunity to take two classes from Leroy. He was an amazing man, not only in the classroom but in the field as well. Leroy only had one speed when hiking-Full speed ahead. Our eldest son was most appreciative of his efforts during his CWP class his senior year at Bay. You can feel great comfort in something you already know. Leroy was a positive influence in the many lives of young people he mentored during his teaching and coaching career. We will always have fond memories of the time we were afforded with him and what we learned from him as well. Sincerely, Bill and Barbara Closson

Leroy was a terrific teacher, coach, scholarship advisor and friend. I first met him in 1966 when I began my teaching career at Hudson\'s Bay H.S. He became a good friend as we worked together for eleven years. He had a wonderful sense of humor and I laughed so often at his funny stories and jokes. His students and athletes adored him, and he was always ready to help anyone any time. He was one of the finest educators I came to know during my thirty years in the Vancouver Public Schools. If I could choose a high school staff, Leroy would be my first choice. He was that good.

We will miss you. You were the best neighbor, anybody could ask for. You inspired me to finish my National Guard career and climb to the highest rank of the an enlisted. You watched over my two sons as they were infant to grown men. I know that Chris learned a lot from his many trips to the farm with you. And cleaning the ash from Mt. St. Helens. My heart felt sympathy goes out to your family. God Bless You.

26 years ago LeRoy let me marry his daughter Karrie. He may still wonder if that was a good idea, but I know I made the right choice. The Burns family has meant so much to me and they had the foundation of one of the best men I have ever know. I\'ll always remember the many times he\'s helped us, all his visits to our island, the education I received while hiking the farm and never being able to go anywhere with him without people coming up to him that he taught, worked with or helped in some way. His grandson Adam remembers the fun grandpa who\'s lap he sat in while "driving" the tractor at a year old. The grandpa who loved to teach him about the family tree farm and the grandpa who could change into the coach of coaches with advice on cross country training. We love our family with all our hearts.

Coach Burns was my favorite high school coach, and I was proud to be on his track team. I remember several trips with him in his vehicle when he would take a few of us to out of town track meets all over the State. My first trip to UW indoor meet with him and a couple of other athletes when I was only a sophomore I will never forget...fond memories of coach Burns...one funny one I will share, was his insistence that I participate in one too many events when we were in a meet in Camas....and we had to forfeit all the events I participated in, which I think were all wins my version at least and we lost the meet.......Coach was so upset with himself, but I kept telling him that I could count too !! He ran a great program and pushed us hard, but also looked out for us. I will add his family to my prayer list and offer my sincere condolences. Respectfully offered-Glenn Coogan
