Irma A. King was born on in Merricourt, ND to the Johannes Herrman family. She was the 13th of 14 children. Her parents arrived to the US from the Ukraine during the mid 1890's. She was raised on various farms in Southern North Dakota. When she was 16, her parents sent her to Camas to live with relatives. At 16, she went to work at Crown Zellerbach paper mill in Camas, making casket bags. In 1938, she married Jack King, where they settled into Camas. Three daughters were born over an eight year period. In 1950, she went to work at Pendleton Woolen Mills, in Washougal, as a weaver. Irma retired from Pendleton, after 28 years, in 1978. Jack and Irma divorced in 1980. For many years, she enjoyed traveling with friends and family. She especially enjoyed going on many cruises, playing cards, traveling to Reno, Vegas, and many destinations in Mexico. As a wonderful friend and relative to others, she knew many in our community. When she began to experience dementia, she moved to The Quarry in Vancouver where she received more personal care. Early in 2016, she went to live at Discovery/Prestige Memory Care, where she lived until her death on April 30, 2016. Her family and friends are very sad at her passing. She had a long and vibrant life enjoying others. She was know for the many lap and baby quilts she made over the years. She loved sewing with her daughters. The family would especially like to thank Discovery Memory Care in Hazel Dell, WA for the excellent care and love given during her stay.
