Ruth Burgwald Hullings
Ruth Burgwald Hullings died peacefully August 5, 2014. She was 91.
She was born May 6, 1923, to Richard and Ruth Burgwald in Grand Rapids, Mi. The family lived in Marshfield, Or. now Coos Bay and Forrest Grove, Or. during some of her grade school years, but moved back to Grand Rapids in 1936. Ruth attended Creston High School in Grand Rapids, where she graduated in 1941. She then moved with her family back to Forest Grove. Ruth worked for Hyster Corporation in Portland, where she married James Hamby in 1952. They lived in several locations in Washington and Oregon for the next decade, following Jim's railroad work. During this time they had 3 sons. In 1962 they moved to Washougal where Ruth found a permanent home.
Ruth was an member of Bethel Church in Washougal, always involved in activities there. She also was a Cub Scout Den Mother, and worked in the offices of a local tire dealer and Hathaway School. She married Woodrow Hullings in 1977. Ruth and Woody enjoyed retirement together, often taking trips with their travel trailer. Woody died in 1982.
After retirement, Ruth became a teacher's aid in Camas elementary schools as part of the Foster Grandparent Program. She enjoyed the daily interaction with young children for many years, until failing eyesight restricted her travels. Ruth enjoyed many activities at her church, as well as sewing, crocheting, crafts, and spending time with friends and family.
Ruth was preceded in death by husbands James Hamby and Woodrow Hullings.
She is survived by sons Richard wife Martha Martin, Robert Hamby and Bill Hamby, 2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Aug. 11, at Bethel Community Church in Washougal. Straub's Funeral Home & Columbia River Cremation in Camas was in charge of arrangements.
