Please share a memory of Sherwood to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sherwood "Skip" Hinman
Sherwood "Skip" Hinman was born to Sherwood and Helen Hinman in Chicago. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by the ones he loved, one month short of his 84th birthday. He was preceded in death by his cherished bride of 62 years, Carol, who passed away in September 2013.
Skip began a long and successful career in the advertising and television industries in the late 1950s with John Blair Television and Co. in Chicago and New York. In 1969, Skip and Carol settled in Lake Oswego when Skip accepted an offer from KATU. After nearly 25 years, Skip retired as vice president and general manager. During his tenure, he was very involved in local programming such as AM Northwest, Town Hall, Faces and Places and Two at Four. He felt strongly about free over the air television and its responsibility to the community. Skip was a great mentor and his leadership style was to trust his people and give them the freedom to succeed and support them along the way. Skip was active in community service; serving on the boards of the Providence Hospital Foundation, The Oregon Trail Chapter of the Red Cross and the Oregon Association of Broadcasters. He was a past president of the OAB and was honored as "Oregon Broadcaster of the Year" in 1991. He was also a member of the Portland Rotary Club.
Skip and Carol were active members of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Parish for nearly 45 years. Skip was a graceful man, had a great spirit, an engaging personality and host of friends. He had a lifelong love of Sunday pot roast dinners with his family. Skip was also a voracious reader, an avid card player and enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by his children, Chuck Hinman Camille, Karyn Sennett Rick, Patricia Mitchell and Greg Hinman Michael Elizabeth. Skip was blessed with 11 grandchildren: Jessica Escutia Simon, Chad Hinman, Brian Stift, Daniel Stift, Shauna Wing Derek, Richard Sennett, David Mitchell Elizabeth, Linda Ochiai Tatsuya, Katherine Mitchell, Elizabeth Mitchell and Samantha Hinman and five great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the team members of Home Instead Senior Care, Carolann Carson, Susan McClendon, Vicki Harguth and Pam Keyes, and Hospice North West. Their dedication and effort to provide quality care were a heartwarming blessing to the entire family. We are thankful for the gift of his life.
