Obituary of Shirley M. Dailey

Please share a memory of Shirley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
SHIRLEY M. ZIEGLER LIGHTHEART DAILEY She was many things to so many people – daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend – and, in the humble opinion of her family, she made the world's greatest potato salad. Shirley M. Ziegler Lightheart Dailey passed away on April 7, 2014 at the age of 86. She was born at home on December 14, 1927 in Bloomfield, Nebraska to Henry and Bessie May Ziegler along with sister Beverly. When she was eight years old, her family left Nebraska on Easter Sunday due to the effects of the Dust Bowls of 1936; the family settled in Washougal where younger sister Janice was born. She graduated from Washougal High School and attended Oregon State University. Upon returning home, she attended Clark College where she met Allen Henry Lightheart. They were married on February 20, 1948 and were together for 30 years. The couple had three children: Lauralee, Jeffrey and James. Shirley worked for Riverview Savings & Loan for 25 years. The family lost Al on August 12, 1978 in a tragic boating accident. In 1981, Shirley was reunited with former high school beau, Paul Dailey; the couple was married on May 2, 1982 – a year from their first reunited date. They would have celebrated 32 years together on May 2, 2014. Golf, traveling, dancing, church and family were their many shared enjoyments. Shirley also enjoyed needle work, making prayer stitchery for her children, baby blankets, table runners and a ring bearer pillow for a grandchild's wedding. One thing of which Shirley was most proud was that all of her grandchildren graduated college. Shirley is survived by her beloved husband Paul; sisters Beverly Bud Knapp and Janice Stanley Murray; sister-in-laws Patty Paul Nelson and Shirley Jim Perkins; children Lauralee Victor Rasmussen, Jeffrey Janine Lightheart and James Cyndee Lightheart; step-children Diane Bill Fordney, Paul Thomas Melissa Dailey, Laura Dailey; grandchildren Amee, Julie Mike, Jessica Gregg, Alisa Andy, Jeffrey Jr. Charmaine, Jill, Allen James Katie, Courtney, David Kate, Alex Rebecca, Paul Hastings and Andrew; great-grandchildren Annabelle, Keegan, Hayley, Grace, Abrielle, Kellen, Madison, Kolton, Mya and Jonah and nieces and nephews. So many accomplishments, so many successes; a wealth of hopes and dreams fulfilled; days and days and days well-lived; and now a legacy to celebrate. Join us to honor Shirley's life on Monday, April 14, 11:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Camas. Straub's Funeral Home & Columbia River Cremation in Camas was in charge of the arrangements. The family would like to thank the Camas-Washougal Fire Dept. and the caring staff at Peace Health Medical Center. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the International RETT Syndrome Foundation, PO Box 706143, Cincinnati, OH, 45270-6143 or Zion Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, 824 NE 4th Garfield, Camas, WA 98607.
