Tom was a wonderful, dedicated family man who gave a piece of himself to everyone he met. My heart breaks to hear of his passing, but I know he lives on not only in his own children, but in the children who have been so lucky to know him. Thank you Tom, along with Peggy, Matt and Chelsea for the years you made me feel part of your family. God bless you!

I was saddened to hear of the passing of, as I knew him, "Coach Hays". I knew him from high school and through his coaching in football and track. He was always so kind and encouraging and genuinely seemed to love teaching, coaching and just being with us students. The thing that most sticks out to me about Tom was, even though he struggled with the complications that came with diabetes, he was always positive and never seemed to let it get him down. It also didn't stop him from enjoying life and pouring out to so many others along the way. He was an inspiration of how to live life while dealing with difficult circumstances. My heart goes out to his family for their loss, I'm sure nothing or no one will be able to replace him.

I only knew Tom as "Coach Hays". He was my freshman football coach. I remember him as a very pleasant and kind man. I can't say I knew him much off the field, but I can say I know what kind of man he was on the field. He was very pleasant and well respected as a coach and as a person because of how well he made us feel about ourselves and how well he respected us as young adolescence. He didn't treat us like the snot nose punks some thought we were as freshman. I ran into "Coach Hays" within the last year and have not seen him since my sophomore year and seeing him brought back my years I played under him and the memories I will have for the rest of my life. It was all great memories. Unfortunately, our society is a lesser place without him and I'm sure most will agree he was a wonderful person and will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Thank you Coach Hays and it was certainly a pleasure to have known you.

Peggy, Matt and Chelsea you are in my thoughts and prayers. I had the privilege of teaching 7th grade language arts next to Tom for years at JMS. We also coached track together. But.... I remember him most skiing Friday nights. Tom could not see well on the slopes in the dark, so he would follow me down the slopes. I am sure he would have liked to go much, much faster, but he never complained. That was Tom, always a brave face and never a word of complaint. We will miss you Tom.

My heartfelt prayers and condolence to you Peggy, Matt and Chelsea at this time of heartache over your loss. I was so sorry to hear the news. "Coach Hays" was the very best! I have many memories of him both as a coach but as a mentor to me as I grew up. So full of compassion, dignity and strength; his heart was enormous as was his sense of humor and he certainly shared it with everyone whose lives he touched. Thank you for all you did for me Coach. Rest in peace! ♥

Your family is in my prayers and thoughts everyday during this difficult time. I remember Tom playing on Linfield's football team in 1976 when I was just a freshman. He was one of the stars. Then 30 years later I met his mother and I know she has always been so proud of him for his positive attitude, no matter how bad he felt. Peace and comfort as you keep all the wonderful memories in your heart.
