Rose Marie Flodin
April 13, 1924 - October 30, 2011
Our beloved Rose died after a valiant 20 month battle with cancer. She was an inspiration to countless people, had a great sense of humor, and was unfailingly kind, generous, patient and loving. Every life she came in contact with was enriched by her presence. She will be mourned, remembered and celebrated by all who knew her.
Rose was born in Pine River, MN, the daughter of Gustav and Rachel Koppenberg. During WWII she moved to the west coast to work as a riveter in Los Angeles. She and her family moved to Portland, OR in 1959 where she raised five children. Rose started cross-country skiing in 1975 which led to hiking and back-packing, then joined the Mazama?s, completing basic climbing school at age 64. She climbed Mt. Hood three times, and many other NW peaks multiple times until age 80. She also bicycled, competed on a dragon boat team, and for 11 years enjoyed skiing at Diamond Lake during Senior week. Rose completed four Portland Marathons her 1st at age 73, and countless half marathons. She was a proud member and fierce competitor on her Portland to Coast team, ?The Second Wind?, for 10 years, her last race at age 86. She also greatly treasured her daily walks with the Osprey?s in Camas, WA at Round Lake Park rain or shine!, and their social activities.
Rose was an dedicated peace activist/anti-war demonstrator beginning in the early 1970?s to present.
Rose was a wonderful loving wife and mother. She was predeceased by her husbands James Skinner, Einar Flodin, Al Seaman; and her firstborn son, Jim Skinner. She leaves behind a grieving family - brother Philip Koppenberg of Akeley, MN; sons Larry and Brian Skinner, daughters Lahni Skinner and Teresa Flodin, daughters-in-law Frances and Beverly Skinner, granddaughters Rachel and Iris Skinner, and Rose Sundahl.
