Gene William Hummels July 1, 1949 - November 5, 2011 Gene William Hummels died November 5th, 2011, at the age of 62, of complications from a stroke. Gene was born July 1st, 1949, in Vancouver, WA, to Leslie and Lucille Hummels, and grew up in Woodland, WA. The eldest of five children, Gene graduated from Woodland High School in 1967, attended Lewis and Clark College but later completed his bachelor's degree in zoology from Western Washington University in 1972. That same year, he began a career with Pacificorp as a Meter and Relay Technician which lasted 35 years until his retirement in 2007. Gene married Jill Williams in 1974, and they spent most of their married life in Vancouver, raising son, Cameron, and daughter, Allison, there. Gene had a great sense of humor and never met a stranger, spending his time enhancing the lives of others. He was active as a coach, referee, organizer and mentor in youth activities, including baseball, chess and Washington State Youth Soccer--the latter for 30 years. He enjoyed genealogy, golf, travel, reading, cooking, wine tasting and entertaining friends, but his biggest joy was his family. He touched many lives with his caring, loving heart and his genuine soul. His gift of himself will be sorely missed. Gene is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jill; son, Cameron, of New York City; daughter, Allison Zack Daniels, of Seattle; mother, Lucille, of Woodland; sisters, Merry Grant Jensen, of Sammamish; Anne Allen, of Woodland; Carrie Scott Zommers, of Vancouver; and sister-in-law, Gretchen Hummels, of Camas. He was preceded in death by his father, Leslie, and his identical twin brother, Dean. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Gene's church, Messiah Lutheran, 905 NW 94th Street, Vancouver, WA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Stroke Association at genehummelsmemorial.com or to Eisenhower Soccer Club, c/o Gene Hummels Memorial Fund, PO Box 65622, Vancouver, WA 98665.
