Obituary of Roger Hughes Moore

Please share a memory of Roger to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Roger H. Moore, PhD, of Vancouver, Washington passed away Wednesday evening, August 3, 2011. He was 82. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Pitzel Moore, and his sons, Mike Moore of Apache Junction, Arizona, Dan Moore, of Brentwood, Tennessee, and his sister, Nancy Moore Warner of King City, Oregon. The son of Frank and Nana Moore, Dr. Moore was born in Portland, OR on April 15, 1929 and spent his school years in Ashland and Gold Beach. He received his Bachelor's and Master's of Science in Mathematics from the University of Oregon, where he was a elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa. His PhD in Mathematical Statistics was awarded by Oklahoma State University. A lifelong public servant, Dr. Moore worked with the Atomic Energy Commission, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the Departments of Commerce and of Energy. His last posting was at the Bonneville Power Administration in Portland. Among his awards and honors, he was most proud to have been named a Fellow of the American Statistical Society. He was known as a friend to all, passionate about social justice, and with a sense of humor that broke the ice and made friends wherever he went. Widely traveled and even more widely read, he was a lively conversationalist on many topics. None would dare take him on in a movie trivia contest, and he believed forever in Oregon Duck Football. Most important in his life were the late Eileen C. Lemley Moore, his wife of 46 years and in whose name he endowed a scholarship in Fine Arts at the University of Oregon; his loving wife Barbara and her family; his sister Nancy and her husband Bill; his children Mike and his wife Tina, Dan and his wife Maria, and the late Kathleen Susan Moore; his many friends across the country; his Moore and Lemley relatives; and his grandchildren Lucas, Lana, Tracy, Daniel, Mary Catherine, Sarah, Christy, and great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn. Gifts in his memory may be made to the Eileen Cathryn Lemley Moore Scholarship Fund in Fine Arts at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Roger Moore's life was truly a life well lived, and the world is better for it. Straub's Funeral Home & Columbia River Cremation in Camas is in charge of the arrangements.
