I've not lived in Washougal for many years and just learned of Mr. Goodale's passing. As soon as I heard, my mind immediately went back to fifth grade and him teaching me how to play the recorder. I loved learning to play and loved Mr. Goodale's class. I remember him as always being in a good mood and never giving up on anyone. I was a bit of a class clown, and somehow he knew how to make that a positive attribute. He will be so missed by thousands of students that went through his classes. My thoughts are with the family. I'm so sorry for yours and our loss.

I was going through some photos recently and found one my mom had taken of Bob and me in our choir robes. When I was a kid Bob's mom and mine sat together in the soprano section at First Presbyterian, Puyallup. He graduated from Puyallup HS and Whitworth College 20 years ahead of me. It was a joy to know him at Columbia Pres., to hear his amazing voice and see how he served the Lord so tirelessly. We all learned to stay on our toes at the fair booth because Bob was going to make sure everything was done right. Well done, good and faithful servant.

Joyce, Bob and you were a grand couple. I am sorry to hear that you have had such a struggle. I ache that you have lost your soulmate.
I adored interacting with Bob through the years. He was ever a source of entertainment and no-nonsense. His take on things was always appreciated. He is one of the people to me who made the Washougal School District of yore, a delightful place to work. I hate that he is gone.

As I read the post on facebook about Mr. Goodale's passing, my mind instantly went back to my 4th grade year 74-75 when I had both Mr. & Mrs. Goodale as teachers. What good memories it stirred up! I have been a teacher for 22 years now and have spent the past 15 years in China. My prayers are with you as you walk through your loss but am thankful you have the hope of being together again. I have very fond memories of Mr. Goodale. He wasn't my teacher, but I certainly remember him at Hathaway and Gause when I was a student. Mrs. Goodale was my 6th grade teacher and I send my condolences to her. I will miss seeing them out walking getting their daily exercise.

Dear Joyce,
I am so sorry. I'll never forget that the two of you rushed back from a trip on the coast so Bob could sing at my dad's funeral. What an amazing voice! I loved having him as my choir teacher in junior high. He always let us sing my favorite songs! We will all miss him.

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Goodale. Although I grew to know him in later years as Bob, I just could never call him that. To me he was always Mr. Goodale, my 1st grade music teacher. By the 4th grade, he was Mr. Goodale, John's dad. He would later become a teacher of the game of chess to several boys, myself included. Even at an early age, Mr. Goodale was someone who I could look up to and respect. During High School, I saw him all the time as John had become a good friend. After High School, I ran into him often. He was so proud of his children, John and Mary Ruth, and spoke of them each time I would see him. He was not one to sit around in retirement. In addition to his volunteer activities, and his church, he loved to walk. I often saw he and Joyce on long walks.
Joyce, John and Mary Ruth, your father was a very special guy. We will all miss him - I know I will. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

To the family our heart felt condolences, Mr. Goodale was my 4th grade reading, math and music teacher and I respected him very much. Mary Ruth we are thinking of you, Dillon and I have lost both our fathers we understand the impact is deep, Our comfort to you and your family in God's speed. Mrs. Goodale thanks for visiting as a sub-teacher in Washougal Class rooms, I always enjoyed when you would sub in one of my classes. One of my most treasured memories of your husbands teaching efforts was in our music class, Your husband taught all of my 4th grade class to play the flute-a-phone recorder In the upstairs of the "Old Columbia bldg". He would gather us all in the room and say let make music, he would offer a few looks when we would play off key, but never told us to quite, instead he told us if we would keep working at it long enough we would most likely find the right key. May God's love comfort you and your family.

It was with great sadness to hear about the passing of Bob. He was such a enjoyable person and seeing his picture in the paper brought back a lot of fond memories for me. I wish I could attend the memorial service but unfortunately will be out of town. Please accept my condolences.

Dear Joyce, John and Mary Ruth,
As I read through some of the guestbook messages, it is clear that Bob touched and influenced many young lives while teaching in Washougal. I too recall the fun times of strumming away on the autoharp. On behalf of the Washougal School District and School Board, we offer our condolences for the passing of a great educator. May he rest in peace.

I, too, learned to enjoy those music classes at the old Gause Elementary school with Mr. Goodale. Being picked to strum the autoharp was an honor. He was a great man who contributed much to the school and the community as a whole. My prayers go out to all of you at this time. Anne

Robert Goodale was my music teacher at Gause school, and I remember how much fun I had making music in his class. And, apparently my husband first fell in love with me in this class, even though I had no clue.
I remember how happy and full of laughter Mr. Goodale was when he was teaching; it was obvious that he loved his job and really cared about the students.
There are many other students like me that were given the gift of music. He continues in many hearts and minds.

Dear Joyce, John, and Mary Ruth,
Steve and I are so saddened to hear of Bob's passing. We have so many wonderful memories of getting together with you all at family reunions. I know Bob and Steve would always share teaching stories when they got together. I always looked for him at the fair, or when he came to the ESD for credit union business, and enjoyed catching up. You have shared a wonderful life together and I know you all have so many loving memories. And by reading these guestbook entries, it is obvious he made a profound impact on so many others. Please know that we will miss him, and we are keeping you in our prayers. With our love and deepest sympathy.

When I think of Bob, I'll always think of his devotion and faithfulness to the Lord, and his disciplined life style.
Bob and Joyce were the first people I met when I started teaching at WHS in 1971. They invited me to their home for dinner many times. I enjoyed babysitting for them when they went to Young Life meetings. I also had John in my Journalism classes when he got to high school.
One year I went with Bob and Joyce to visit with them while they set up their classrooms. I was helping Bob make alphabet characters to go over his blackboard. I'll never forget the way he chuckled when he saw my J's. He'd never seen any like that before, so quickly I redid that chart with the correct style J.
Bob and Joyce invited me to attend their church and continued to invite me until I joined. Bob and Joyce are wonderful examples of how people should live a caring, Christian life.
My best wishes to Joyce, John, Mary Ruth, and their families.

I was fortunate to be a student of Mr. Goodale early on in my life and then 40+ years later to work with him through ARES/RACES of Clark County for emergency communications within the fire service. He was always courteous, happy, humorous and professional. I will miss the man. Rest in peace Bob!

I was one of the thousands of Washougal students that benefited from Robert Goodale’s music classes. He not only inspired an appreciation of music, but encouraged everyone to participate in group activities, a skill that extended into all parts of education and growing up.
On a personal level, my lovely wife first caught my eye in Mr. Goodale’s 7th grade choir class, although it took several decades for me to catch her eye. I have many fond memories from his classes, even extending into my high school years, when he was my chaperone/chauffeur to all-state choir in Yakama during my junior year.
I am very sad to hear of his passing. Robert Goodale probably touched more young lives, and in a very positive way, than any other individual in the history of the Washougal School system.
