Mary Moyer Chung
August 24, 1917-November 19, 2009
Mary Moyer Chung was born August 24, 1917 to Lewis Lum Moy and Dorothy Ho yoke choi Moyer in Portland, Oregon.
She grew up in Portland with her two brothers Lewis Jr. and Jimmy. Additionally she had an adopted brother Lee. Her brother Lee was in the Merchant Marines and Mary loved it when he came home with special treasures from around the world. Mary's Mother and Father owned a dry goods store on N. Russell Street in Portland and lived in a house behind the store. Some of her memories when she was growing up were of her and her brothers riding bikes and trikes up and down the isles of the store nearly running over the customers. In the summer her Dad would ship the whole group to Gearheart, Ore so they wouldn't be under foot, he would then take the train down and spend the weekend with them. One weekend her Mother caught a bird on the beach and cooked it for her dad to take home with him. Although she thought it was a duck, we are quite sure this was a Seagull!
Mary Graduated from Jefferson High School and then attended and graduated from the Northwestern School of Commerce with a Secretarial degree.
August 14, 1938 she married Joe Chung. They had two boys Dennis and Richard.
Mary was a homemaker it the true sense of the word her home was always open, I don't believe that anyone ever left hungry.
Mary loved to sew and she made most of her own clothes one of her prized possessions was her sewing machine as it was a big purchase for her, a top of the line Necchi. This machine is still going strong. She even made neckties when this was the rage in the early 70's
In 1970 after the boys had left home Joe and Mary built a home in Gresham. Joe had a stroke and passed away November 16, 1977. Mary remained in her home until she broke her hip.
Mary has four grandchildren and she dearly loved having them over. She would always have a special craft for them to do, she was what every grandchild hoped to have as a grandmother.
She loved cooking, knitting, crocheting and all kinds of crafts if anything new came out she was right there trying to do it.
Mary is Survived by her two Sons Dennis Chung of Washougal, WA, Richard of Tigard, OR, Grandchildren Robin Winters of Portland, OR, Joseph Chung of Beaverton, OR, Holly Jackson of Vancouver, WA and Rian Chung of Redmond, WA and great grandsons Tevor & Kevin Chung.
