GENE A. AXON
Gene A. Axon, of Washougal, passed away June 25, 2009 in Portland, OR at the age of 79. Gene was born on June 6, 1930 in Port Townsend, WA where he enjoyed a happy childhood fishing and swimming in the salt water. During WWII he had his first job delivering newspapers to the service men aboard ships anchored in Port Townsend Bay. At age 16 Gene moved to Washougal and graduated from Washougal High School in 1948. Gene was a skilled carpenter and recently built two cedar homes in Brinnon. He fulfilled a life-long goal of building a Victorian style house with a turret.
His favorite activities were fishing, hunting and traveling. Gene also enjoyed taking friends and family to Seattle by ferry to watch Mariner's games. He was involved with his children's activities such as coaching Little League and Babe Ruth teams and assisting with Boy Scout projects.
While on active duty with the Army, Gene was a Master Sergeant. He received the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. Gene will live forever in our hearts.
Survivors include Norma Robinson; children, Jeanne Axon, David Axon, Raymond Paul Robinson, Terri Nicacio, Betty Fortes and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A graveside service with military honors will be held Monday July 6 at 11:00AM at the Washougal Memorial Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to an open house at 748 "C" St. in Washougal from 12:00 to 3:00 PM. Straub's Funeral Home & Columbia River Cremation in Camas is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given in Gene's name to the Portland Veterans Administration Medical Center c/o Vancouver nursing Skills Care Unit, Voluntary Services, 1601 E. 4th Plain Blvd., Vancouver, WA 98661.
