William James Cain, 78, of Camas, WA passed away on April 27, 2009 after an extended illness. Bill was born June 21, 1930 in San Jose, CA to Thomas Charles and Hazel Taylor Cain. He was the youngest of three children and had an older brother, Thomas Charles Jr. and sister Nan Boyer.
Bill was a Business major at San Jose State University where he met his wife of 58 years, Mary Gupton Siler, on a blind date. Bill and Mary have four children, Mary Elizabeth and Rand Dickson of Medford, OR, Sally Ann and Don Houck of Vancouver, WA, William James Jr. and Jill Lynch Cain of Petaluma, CA, and Thomas Charles of Elkins, WV. Bill's legacy also includes 16 grand children and 10 great-grand children.
Bill had a successful career in adversting, rising from an intern at the San Francisco Examiner to founder of William Cain Inc. in Portland, OR, where more notable clients included Louisiana Pacific and Nike. Bill was also a co-founder of a successful wine company, Duckhorn Vineyards, located in St. Helena, CA.
Bill was a wonderful husband, loving and involved father and avid golfer. He was the founder of the exclusive Pineapple Club in Waikoloa, HI and the elder statesman of St. Williams Day, an annual event to celebrate the life of St. William, a 17th century English soldier who lost his right arm in battle, but continued to fight and earn the respect of his countrymen.
A private service for Bill will be held Sunday, May 3d for family members. In lieu of cards or flowers, donations may be made to Hospice SW or Hospice House at P.O. Box 1600, Vancouver, WA, 98668. Please include "In Memory of William Cain" on your check or a separate piece of paper.
