Obituary of Lawrence E. ''Babe'' Smario

LAWRENCE E. SMARIO Lawrence â??Babeâ?? Smario passed away March 7 at his home in Washougal at the age of 86. He was born July 6, 1921 in Santa Monica, CA and raised in Oakland. Babe enlisted in the Navy and served during WWII. While in the Navy he attended Aviation Mechanics School in Wichita, KS and that is where he met Ida Ralston. They married in 1943 in Florida. After his military service he returned to Oakland and worked as a mechanic for a cab company. They moved to Hayward, CA and Babe became the Transportation Manager for a large bakery. After he retired they moved to Twain Heart, CA and have spent the past 3 ½ years in Washougal. Babe enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and woodworking in his shop. He is survived by his wife, Ida, at home; sons, Lawrence, Jr. of Castro Valley, CA, Jerry of Garden Valley, ID, Tom of Washougal, WA; 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Private family services will be held at a later date. Straubâ??s Funeral Home & Columbia River Cremation in Camas is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be sent to Kaiser Hospice @ 2701 NW Vaughn St. #140, Portland, OR 97210.
