Obituary of Hugh A. Knapp

HUGH A. KNAPP Hugh A. Knapp, a lifelong Camas resident, passed away July 14, 2007. He was 86. Mr. Knapp was born July 7, 1921, in Camas to Claude and Winnifred Fike Knapp. He was the fourth generation of the Knapp family in Clark County. Hugh graduated from Camas High School in 1939 and then from Whitman College in 1944. During WWII, Hugh served as a Lieutenant J.G. for the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater. He would marry Madeline Dyer in 1946 and graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1948. Mr. Knapp started a law firm in Camas with partner Bob O?Dell in 1951 and retired at the age of 70. In addition to the courts of the State of Washington, Mr. Knapp was also admitted to the United States Supreme Court During his professional career Mr. Knapp served as President of the Clark County Bar Association and was the attorney for the Port of Camas/Washougal and Riverview Community Bank. He served as President and was a board member of Orchard Hills Golf & Country Club of which he was a long time member. Hugh also served on the board of the Camas/Washougal Community Chest and was a member of the Kiwanis Club. Mr. Knapp was also a proud member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity at Whitman College. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald F. Knapp. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Madeline Knapp, at home; son, Roger and his wife, Rosemary Knapp of Camas; daughter, Deborah Knapp and her husband, Ash Eddy of Columbia Falls, MT; sister, Catherine A. Smith of Vancouver and grandsons, Andy and Elliot Knapp. At his request there will be no formal services. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Straub?s Funeral Home & Columbia River Crematory in Camas is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial donations can be given to the Ray Hickey Hospice House @ 2112 E.
