Obituary of Thomas Ray Gilstrap

Thomas Ray Gilstrap passed away peacefully on February 8, 2024 in Vancouver, WA at the age of 78. He was born on July 23, 1945, in Casper, Wyoming. Tom graduated from Centennial High School in Gresham, Oregon in 1963. Tom lettered all four years in basketball and track and was
very proud to have held the pole vault record of 13.6” for many years. He then went on to college until he enlisted in the National Guard during the Vietnam War being based in Georgia. He dedicated several years in service to his Country before being honorably discharged.

Throughout his career, Tom dedicated the majority of his professional life to the lumber industry, serving as a General Manager for Taylor Lumber for over two decades. In addition to his lengthy tenure at Taylor, he also spent several years working at BMC West. His hard work, extensive
knowledge, and the friendships he fostered with his colleagues earned him a respected status within the lumber industry.

During his retirement years, Tom had a passion for woodworking and made many treasured gifts for family and friends. Also during retirement, Tom and his partner, Carol Gibbins, cherished many memories together including square dancing plus traveling to places like Alaska,
Indonesia, Peru, and the Galápagos Islands.

Tom also had a special place in his heart for his cat, Cinnamon, a faithful companion who brought much joy and comfort to his life.

Tom leaves behind a loving family: brothers David, Robert, and Danny Gilstrap; daughter Angela Ranniger (Steve); son Thomas Gilstrap (Tammy), three grandchildren, Levi Gilstrap, Nicole Gilstrap, and Matthew Ranniger; and Carol Gibbins, his loving partner of many years. He
is predeceased by his father, Eldon Owen Gilstrap, his mother, Wyoma June Gilstrap, his brother Jack Gilstrap and his sister Janet Brown.

A celebration of Tom’s life is scheduled for Saturday, March 9, 2024, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at the Fern Prairie Grange, 1814 NE 267th Avenue, Camas WA 98607. Friends and family are invited to join in remembering Tom, sharing stories and memories of a life well-lived.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
