Clayton J. Smith
Jan. 25, 1922 - March 28, 2008
Clayton Smith, longtime Camas resident, passed away at the home he shared with his son
and daughter in law in Battle Ground, WA, surrounded by his children and grandchildren,
on March 28, 2008, at the age of 86. He was born in Knoxville, TN, one of 9 children born to Charles and Oda Jane Smith.
Clayton was a WWII Veteran and Purple Heart recipient, fighting in the Luzon Campaign
in San Manuel, Pangasinan Luzon, Philippine Islands, for which E Company, 161st Infantry Regiment, US Army, was cited for Battle Honors by the President for outstanding performance of duty in action against the enemy, January 24 - January 28, 1945, resulting in 59 lives lost.
After the war he returned to Camas, working at the Crown Zellerbach paper mill for over 43 years until his retirement in 1987. His passions included gardening, hunting, his hound dogs, fishing, traveling, good music and long walks with his wife or family members in the area of Lacamas Lake, which is near his home on Woodburn Hill. After giving his heart to his Lord and Savior, he enjoyed the fellowship of his Christian family at the Riverside Seventh-day Adventist Church in Washougal.
Clayton was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy Ann McQueen, mother of his 8
children, and by his parents, Charles and Oda Jane, and his sisters, Edith Lawson, Blanche Cranford and Lois Olson.
Clayton is survived by his second wife, Georgia, his sons: Robert Linda, Dennis Mary
Ann, Ronald Lori, his daughters: Bonnie Joseph Kilwein, Betty Scott, Anita Schell,
Nancy Craig Winnett, and Julie Patrick Jones; his brothers: Wallace and Phillip Wanda and sisters: Mary Beatrice Morten, Louise Glenn Swearingen, Evelyn Burton Curtis, and 17 Grandchildren, 2S Great-grandchildren, and 1 Great-Great Grandson, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing for family and friends will be held Tuesday, from Noon to 5pm at Straubâ??s Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held at the Fern Prairie Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April12 at 3 PM, at the Riverside SDA Church on Shepherd Road in Washougal. Donations may be given to Riverside SDA or to a charity of choice.
